  Facial Trauma

Plastic Surgery is the medical specialty responsible for the repair of of facial injuries. Optimal outcomes for these patients require a thorough knowledge of the facial anatomy, reconstructive techniques and surgical principles. Whilst the care of patients with facial trauma is immensely rewarding in itself, the training and experience in this field is of great value in safely achieving quality results in cosmetic facial surgery.

Operative Treatment of Fractured Zygoma (cheek bone)

This patient sustained a fracture of the right zygoma (cheek bone). The CAT scan clearly demonstrates the impacted nature of the fracture.

CAT scans are cross sectional xrays of the face typically imaged 3-5 mm apart. This image is a from a slightly lower level (closer towards the chin)

This facial bone fracture was treated with open reduction (repair through skin incisions) placed in the eyebrow and beneath the lower eyelashes.

Dissection to the fractures enabled the bones to be anatomically re-aligned and held in stable position with small metal plates and screws.

The post operative CAT scan confirms a satisfactory repair.

This 3-dimensional CT scan demonstrates that the cheek bone has been restored to its anatomic position. The two metal plates used to secure the fractures are apparent on the lower(infraorbital) and upper outer(frontozygomatic) orbital rims.

The incisions heal well and usually become insignificant after a few months.
